E-Guide to Career Portfolios

Career Portfolios require initiative and personal responsibility.

It is YOUR commitment to managing YOUR life.

    •  Several months ago Google took away it’s bachelor degree requirement!  NO they did not lower their standards—they changed how they quantify and measure knowledge, skills and abilities—now they look for the evidence of “Exceptional People!”  The leading employers already know we are consuming education differently.
    • We are in an exciting new place for learning.  The new world of seminars, boot camps, online academies and target courses stack into your own education and professional development plan. Don’t forget that internships, apprenticeship’s and community service also give evidence of knowledge, skills and abilities when documented too. And best of all you choose what to do because you know the minimum viable ROI (Return on Investment) before you spend money or take on strategic debt.
    • It takes proof to open the door to a new position…it does not matter whether you call it the Career Portfolio, Professional Portfolio, or Portfolio—it is the best work samples put together for skill areas needed in your targeted career (job-title). (We’ve been doing this for over 20 years—we prefer Career Portfolio but all terms get you where you need to expand your career.)

Because career portfolios can make a big impact on a future or current employer, it is always important to “test-drive” the delivery of your work. Never hesitate to grab a friend and go through a practice interview, that way you are comfortable with navigating your portfolio and can transition seemlessly through different questions. Once you are comfortable presenting your career portfolio, then you can begin to easily read your audience to discern when the right time to dive in might be. The below tips and tricks will help you understand the “when”of career portfolios.

      Job Interview

      • explain a breif summary of your career portfolio right at the beginning of the interview, that way the interview can decide if they want to know or see more.
      • Keep the explaination brief, but make sure to note there are tangible samples of your work.

      Performance Review and Promotion Requests

      • Most review and promotion decisions are made before the discussion even happens
      • It is very important to present your career portfolio to your supervisor before the day of the actual meeting.
      • Be sure to give your supervisor enough time to thoroughly review your work samples and information. It benefits you to provide the career portfolio 1-2 weeks in advance.
